Retailers across America have been announcing that they will be hiring thousands of seasonal workers for the holiday season this year, just in time for a wave of new labor regulations. On December 1, 2016, updates to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will raise the minimum salary threshold required to qualify for exemption from the Fair Labor Standards Act’s to $50,440 per year from the current $23,660. While this change will likely not affect these temporary employees, other state and local legislation influencing worker schedules and on-call shifts just might.
